What is SOC 2?

SOC 2 (Service Organization Control 2) is an auditing framework developed by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) that evaluates an organization's information systems relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.

Unlike SOC 2 Type I (point-in-time assessment), SOC 2 Type II evaluates the effectiveness of your controls over a period of time (typically 3-12 months), providing more credibility and assurance to your customers.

Type I vs. Type II: what it means for a 10-80 person SaaS company

A Type I report says your controls were designed correctly on a single date. A Type II report says those controls actually operated correctly over an observation window, typically several months of real evidence, not a snapshot.

For most SaaS companies in the 10-80 person range, Type I can work as an interim trust signal while the observation window for Type II is running, but it rarely satisfies an enterprise security team on its own. Procurement teams increasingly ask for Type II by default, because it's the version that proves the controls hold up over time, not just on paper.

What the audit window actually looks like

  • Before the window opens: gap assessment, control implementation, and policy work, closing what's missing before the clock starts.
  • During the observation window: controls run in production and generate evidence continuously. The length is set with your auditor based on scope and what your customers are asking for, not a fixed industry number.
  • After the window closes: auditor fieldwork, evidence review, and report issuance. Having evidence organized ahead of time is what keeps this phase short.

Common blockers companies hit along the way

None of these are unusual. They're the reason a gap assessment happens before the observation window, not during it.
  • Access reviews and offboarding that happen irregularly instead of on a set cadence
  • Evidence scattered across tools nobody checks consistently
  • Written policies that don't match how the team actually works day to day
  • Vendor and subprocessor reviews that fall behind once the initial setup is done
  • No single owner for audit-day logistics, so requests sit unanswered
  • A platform like Vanta, Drata, or Sprinto flagging gaps that nobody has time to actually close

Already running Vanta, Drata, or Sprinto? We operate it for you, so the evidence it collects actually turns into a clean audit instead of an unresolved backlog.
